La Sultana Marrakech: Hotel Review

Hotel: La Sultana Marrakech / Site Visit: March 2024 / Program: Tablet Pro and others

La Sultana Marrakech is a collection of five historic riads, close to the Royal Palaces, with lovely courtyards and an absolutely stunning pool. The gardens and rooftops overlook the city. It is located close to the historic sites of the Saadian Tombs, Royal Palace, and Bahia Palace. It has c. 28 rooms including 15 luxury suites, and a terrace with views over the city.

During our trip to Marrakech, we spoke to our travel partners at La Sultana Marrakech and tour the property. The hotel was at full occupancy (not surprising) hence we only checked a Riad Room which is their base category.

Tablet Pro Rate and Benefits

Before we review the property, a quick note that the hotel can be booked under Tablet Pro programme. Booking under the rate, you can receive the following benefits:

  • $100 hotel credit for food & beverage credit when staying a minimum of two nights
  • Guaranteed late check-out at 2pm
  • One category room upgrade (subject to availability at check-in)

Location: La Sultana Marrakech

La Sultana is located in the heart of the Medina in Marrakech, in the Kasbah neighbourhood. The location is perfect for people who want to be a stone’s throw away from all major attractions and also experience the luxury the hotel has to offer.

Hotel Entrance: La Sultana Marrakech

The entrance is just off the busy Rue de La Kasbah and down a small alleyway. One wouldn’t otherwise know that a luxury riad is located here as there are no visible signs nor a grand entrance like you have with Royal Mansour or La Mamounia for instance. This however is the charm of luxury riads in Marrakech and what differentiates them from hotels.

The check-in desk is just right at the entrance where the staff greets you. This also doubles up as the concierge desk where we had a quick chat, once they attended guests checking out.

The check-in area is relatively small and very simple. The grandeur of La Sultana however lies once you make your way through the main corridor into the main/central courtyard.

We were met in this beautiful room by the La Sultana team. As far as first impressions go, this is a fabulous location to relax whilst your check-in formalities are processed and you await to be taken to your riad.

Bahia Riad

One of our favourite riads from the five riads within this property was the Bahia Riad…or what we call the ‘white riad’. We couldn’t find a better way to refer to this riad after our tour so we started calling it the ‘white riad’. This is because of its white stone-washed marble and intricate white carving on the pillars and walls.

It looks beautiful during the sunlight. The central ‘pool’ is charming and it felt very private from the rest of the property. There are around 5-6 rooms which surround this riad. A large family could easily book this entire riad and they’ll end up with an exclusive luxury riad for themselves. This setting would be hard to beat!

Room: Riad Room

The Riad Room offers the quintessential Moroccan Riad experience. Typically in riads, the rooms surround the internal courtyard (or riad) with windows and the door facing the courtyard. This means you typically don’t have windows facing outside/externally. This can potentially be claustrophobic for some people and it’s an important consideration when deciding between a riad and other hotels.

Rooftop: The Odette Rooftop Bar & Mezzé

Located on the spacious outdoor terrace overlooking the Medina, the Odette offers a global cuisine. With food matched with a large choice of signature cocktails flavoured with Moroccan spices, this dining experience is made to be shared with friends through menus or an array of small plates. During our daytime visit, the terrace was quite quiet, but it does get very busy during the evenings.

Rooftop Cooking Class

The rooftop also has a dedicated section for cooking classes, where guests can pre-book cooking experiences ranging from bread-making to local Morrocan sweets.

Learn how to make Moroccan bread dough in the simplest way. Ingredients will be ready for you to mix, knead and shape the dough. Part of the experience also includes a presentation of local spices & pots and the traditional mint tea ritual, before preparing and cooking the dough under the guidance of the Chef.

During the Moroccan sweet gastronomy experience, guests can learn how to bake Chebakia, Corne de Gazelle and Sweet Bastilla.

Spa at La Sultana Marrakech

The Spa at La Sultana Marrakech offers traditional Hammams to Argan oil deep relaxation massages. It also has a heated indoor jacuzzi and a hairdressing salon.

We leave you with this beautiful image of The Spa that reminds us of a Roman Bath mixed with Moroccan touches.

Pool: La Sulatana Marrakech

This was probably our favourite spot of the entire property. The entire vibe in the morning felt calm and peaceful. It would get busier during the afternoon once guests return from their morning trip to the Medina.

Just relaxing by the pool you wouldn’t think you’re just metres away from the busy streets of Marrakech’s Medina.

Conclusion

We, unfortunately, could not stay at the property during our visit to Marrakech but were very glad to have had the opportunity to tour the property.

La Sultana Marrakech will work for guests who are looking to visit the Medina multiple times a day during their visit as it’s literally metres away from the famous Kasbah area. Secondly, it gives you the proper Morrocan riad experience that many guests look out for but with all the hallmarks of a true luxury property. You can also pair this with their sister property at the coast for a perfect beach + sea-side getaway holiday.

It may not however work for guests looking for grand lobbies and massive resort-like vibes. You won’t get that here and in that case then riads are probably not your vibe anyway!
